Press Release

Gavlak is pleased to present a group exhibition in celebration of the gallery’s ten-year anniversary. Taking place at both the Los Angeles and Palm Beach location, the exhibition reflects on Gavlak’s ten years in business, and will include works by artists Gavlak has represented since 2005, alongside artists new to the gallery’s roster, and those whose work reflects the gallery’s sensibility.

On November 26th, 2005 Sarah Gavlak opened her first public gallery, Gavlak, in West Palm Beach, Florida. Gavlak’s first exhibition was a solo show of Wade Guyton paintings, the artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States. Gavlak then went on to give early exhibitions to Sheila Hicks, Marilyn Minter, and Aleksandra Mir, among others. From the outset, the gallery featured the work of international emerging and established artists working in painting, sculpture, photography, works on paper, and video, and emphasized pioneering women and LGBT artists on its roster.

The gallery quickly gained critical acclaim for its outstanding roster of contemporary artists, and continued to grow. After having worked and attended grad school in Los Angeles from 1992-2000, Gavlak returned on June 26, 2014 to open a second eponymous gallery in Hollywood. The gallery opened with 5,000 square feet, but quickly expanded to 10,000 square feet by February of 2015. The new space allows Gavlak to stage larger and more ambitious exhibitions by her roster of contemporary artists, and to turn an eye to California-based artists in particular.

Ten Year Anniversary is a celebration of ten years as an internationally renowned gallery, and provides a chance to showcase the artists who have influenced the gallery’s trajectory. Taken together the works reflect the gallery’s mission-driven program and aesthetic sensibility.

Artists featured in the exhibitions are: Jose Alvarez (D.O.P.A.), Judie Bamber, Amy Bessone, Andrew Brischler, Lecia Dole-Recio, Judith Eisler, Orly Genger, David Haxton, Michael John Kelly, Bovey Lee, Simone Leigh, Michael Manning, Marilyn Minter, Lily Stockman, Vincent Szarek, Betty Tompkins, T.J. Wilcox, Brian Wills, and Rob Wynne.
