Art Basel Miami Beach

GAVLAK presents a cohort of Latinx, African American, and Afro-Carribean artists, drawing on intersectional histories: Candida Alvarez, Jose Alvarez (D.O.P.A.), Alex Anderson, Paul Stephen Benjamin, April Bey, Gisela Colón, Kim Dacres, FriendsWithYou, and José de Jesus Rodriguez. In a selection of previously unseen artwork, Oscillate Wildly interrogates a situation of “third culture”—a phrase that’s just on the periphery of ordinary use. The term describes composite, present-day realities of migration and emigration and—as it applies to Latinx artists—invokes a long history of European, North American, and African encounters. This pre-sensation continues GAVLAK’s commitment to BIPOC and LGBTQ+ artists.
